This wreck was
located by Steve Smith and company in late 2005 (to the best our knowledge
although its very possible to have been located by others as well).
It sits near a cool rocky reef in 120 ft of water off Point Loma.
From the original dive on the wreck there appeared to be machinery
still visible, possibly a winch among other things. Its possible this
barge may have been carrying a cargo of rocks but more research and
diving is necessary to confirm this. At this point the barge is unidentified
but will be the target of more research in the future. The wreck itself
is approximately 100 ft or longer with about 10 ft or more of relief
off the bottom. Its pretty well consumed by growth and is home to
a very large amount of life including vermillion rockfish, sheephead,
kelp bass, blacksmith and plenty of others. This wreck is also home
to various species of nudibranchs, abalone and other interesting critters.
Photographs of this wreck taken by Tyler Stalter are shown to in the
photo album linked on the right.
There are plans
to revisist this wreck so keep an eye on this page for updates
