UPDATE
(January 2007): The topography of the canyon changed significantly
after the winter storms of 2006/2007 - see the video highlights of
the canyon here. These
storms also moved the cabezon cruiser and "Wolf Eel Barrel".
The cruiser now rests, upside down, in 165 fsw and just south of it
is the "Wolf Eel Barrel". We will be obtaining video and
pictures of these in the coming weeks and will update this page as
soon as we do. Keep an eye out for it!
This dive spot
is accessible as a shore dive. The blue plastic barrel lies along
a slope in a north-south orientation on the north side of a ridge
which is approximately 150 fsw when the barrel structure is extrapolated
to the top of the ridge. The barrel itself is located around 165 fsw
down the slope. A lone Wolf Eel resides in this barrel and was last
observed in May 2005. The barrel has a single hole through which the
Wolf Eel monitors its surroundings; the barrel has a white PVC pipe
which extends downslope and ends with some type of fitting. The upslope
portion also contains some pipe which is connected to a large metal
chain which disappears into the silty sandy slope near the top of
the ridge. The purpose of this structure is currently unknown. The
video on the right was take in April 2005, more recent visits to the
barrel have indicated that the wolf eel is no longer in residence
although it is possible that the wolf eel was deeper in the barrel
during these visits.
